SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING MARKS WORLD ENGINEERING DAY AND ENGINEERING WEEK

The School of Engineering has held its version of the World Engineering Day in line with the launch of the Engineering Week celebration for 2020.

The celebration which was held under the theme: “Engineering for Sustainable Development” saw students float through the principal streets of Sunyani to create awareness and later joined by Lecturers as well as some members of the Ghana Institute of Engineers (GHIE), Bono and Ahafo Chapter to launch the week celebration.

The Head of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Ing. Dr Amos Kabo-bah welcoming the participants to the occasion noted that the Department has over the years engaged in innovations through the Earth Observation Research and Research Center (EORIC) which has made it possible for students to put their knowledge to use. He added that the Engineering Week celebration was therefore meant to share innovative ideas and discuss the way forward.

In his keynote address, the Dean of School of Engineering, Ing. Prof. Dr Nana Sarfo Agyemang Derkyi said the main aim of the celebration was to come together as Engineers to interact and share creative ideas in the engineering industry. Prof. Derkyi additionally outlined some goals of the celebration saying that it seeks to demonstrate the roles of Engineers in society, to develop solutions for climate change issues, to encourage more young people especially girls to pursue their career path in engineering among others.

He advised the students not to be discouraged by the challenges they encounter in their quest to become engineers rather, be strengthened towards achieving their dreams.

The President of the GHIE,UENR Chapter, Mr Yaw Berko Michael Tawiah in his delivery, called on his colleagues to fully partake in all activities of the week-long celebration which has educative and innovative programmes outlined to equip them for the next world after school.

Solidarity and motivational messages were delivered by invited officials from GHIE—Bono and Ahafo Chapter, NEDCO and Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.
